LOCAL HISTORY

Gosport railway station was a terminus station designed by William Tite and opened in 1841. The station saw the first of many royal visitors in 1843, when Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, greeted Louis Philippe of France at Gosport terminus. Following Albert's purchase of Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, Queen Victoria and her husband frequently passed through the station on their way to the Royal Yacht at the jetty in Clarence Yard.
